I love computer games but these days I just don’t have the time to play at all. I usually don’t play those 3D monsters unless the game is exceptionally good and I’m very picky (add that my current hardware configuration is less then adorable). But I do like those puzzle type games. One day, I was introduced to online riddles. I just loved them. If you like solving puzzles I’m sure you’ll like’em, too.
I’m not sure who made the first online riddle but I know that the most famous is Notpron.
A typical online riddle consists of so called levels. Your objective is to pass to the next level and ultimately finish the riddle (which may take a few days or months).
One way to pass a level is by changing the url of the page. Say the current url of the page is httttp://ercansriddle/levelone.htm. If there is no other link to advance the level the solution might be changing the url to httttp://ercansriddle/leveltwo.htm. Of course such easy levels are only right at the beginning for a little warm up and soon things become quite complex.
Another way to pass a level is to click a clickable area in the page and enter the passwords that you should have found by collecting and deducting the given hints.
The hints may be in the form of text, picture, sound or anything you can imagine. Sometimes you may need to analyze the picture with a graphics editor. Sometimes you may have to analyze the sound or audio file with a suitable audio editor, etc. All of those tools are found freely in the net. There are dozens of them. You may even have to decipher a complicated cryptogram.
So here are a *few* links to get started. The list has no intention of being “complete” but I’m sure will be sufficient for most of you for quite a long time.
Before you dive into this addictive world here are my advices: Never cheat! There’s no point. Never give up. If cannot solve it immediately do not think that you are stupid. Just stand up, have a drink come back again. Still no idea? Leave it as it is for a few days then come back again. Lastly, beware! They are really addictive.
Notpron is probably the most famous of the lot. Many other online riddles actually admit that notpron was their source of inspiration. I’m at level 49 at the moment.
A dark, creepy online riddle. The difficulty of levels is quite satisfying.

This riddle is unique in a way that you have to sign up their forum and find your way to the following levels within there.

Yet another truly unique online riddler. You don’t have to be hardcore programmer to solve the riddles.

Python Challenge welcomes programmers of all languages. You will be able to solve most riddles in any programming language, but some of them will require Python.”

A good online riddle with many levels (about 130 and probably still expanding).

It’s clear that the people who made the Challus Riddled spend lots of time and on the levels and the story. A must-check-out. By the way, the $1,000,000 award is for US citizens only. Oh well, if I solve it I’ll apply for green card.

Well, you are probably wondering whether this list will ever finish, hope it will. Anyhow, there are some really difficult challenge type riddles. To solve those challenges you should be good at various programming languages (especially Java), a good knowledge of Assembly, exploiting, reverse engineering, security hacking, network hacking, in short you should be a at least so so hacker. What a great article! I found your site while searching for my next riddle project (I’ve just finished Dracula’s Riddle and the first part of Zest). Wow, you have certainly been doing your research. How many of them have you played?

Thank you. As to your story based riddle I’d suggest “Do not rush!”. If possible have a beta time for some months. Once you’re sure that it’s matured with enough levels and potential for more then it’d be the time to put on the web.

Hi.
Two months ago, I uploaded Sapiens, my last riddle, a spanish riddle that since today, it’s available also in english.
The main feature wich make Sapiens different to any other game of this kind is that this is an open game, you don’t have to solve a level to get the next one, but is the player itself who decide the order to solve the levels on each phase.
When you solve enough levels, you get through that phase to a higher one, where new challenges wait for you.
The flash core of the game keeps a registry of levels solved, wrong attempts, generate your score which is used to make a ranking, informes you about new levels, etc.
For all these things work, you must register an user.
You only need a nick and a e-mail, and flash plugin installed in your browser.
The game has a tutorial and there is a forum to ask for hints.
